Norske Backer has committed to Science Based Target initiative on the SME route!
What is Science Based Target initiative (SBTi)?
Science Based Target initiative is a cooperation between CDP, United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute and World Wide Fund for Nature. SBTi shows companies and organizations how much and how fast the emissions must be reduced to avoid the worst climate changes.
An important foundation for the SBTi is that the world governments in 2015 committed themselves to do measures to limit the global heating to 1,5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, in conjunction with the Paris Agreement. For this to be possible, the GHG emissions must be halved within 2030, and reduced to net-zero within 2050.
Committed to the SBTi
In June 2023, we committed us to Science Based Target initiative, where we committed to reduce our emissions.
As we are a company with less than 500 employees, we follow the SME route. This route allows small and medium sized companies to transmit targets through an exclusive streamlined target validation route. This way, small and medium sized companies can avoid the initial phase of committing with a science-based target and the standard validation process.
As a small or medium sized company, we have to different target setting options. We can set a short-term scienced based target, where we are to reduce our GHG emission on Scope 1 and Scope 2 within 2030. We are not committed to set short-term targets on Scope 3, but we are however committed to measuring and reducing these emissions.
We can also set a net-zero target. To be able to do this, we first must set short-term targets adjusted to a 1,5 degrees course. The net-zero target includes long-term science-based targets to reduce GHG emissions to reduce GHG emissions on Scope 1, 2 and 3 within 2050. In addition, one is also committed to neutralizing all undiminished emissions when the long-term target is achieved.
Norske Backers commitment
Norske Backer has, to start with, set a short-term science-based target. We are going to reduce our GHG emissions with minimum 40% within 2030 and used 2022 as our base year. In the preparatory work to SBTi we have used Variable to set up our climate accounting. We found that our emissions in 2022 was on the total of 315,08 tCO2e.2e i 2022.

Direct emissions
Scope 1 deals with those emissions that is connected to something that the company owns and are those emissions that the company is directly responsible for.
Use of electricity
Scope 2 omhandler de CO2 Scope 2 include those GHG emissions that are related to the company’s electricity and district heating consumption.
Indirect emissions
This category regards all of the company’s indirect emissions, except electricity and district heating covered by Scope 2. Scope 3 includes all of the emissions connected to goods and services the company buys and sells. Therefore, Scope 3 can also be split into upstream and downstream.
After our first year with climate accounting, we are happy to announce that we have reduced our GHG emissions by all of 28% since 2022 in scope 1 and 2!
How to achieve our goals?
We have developed a detailed measurement plan that we would like to share. Some of our measures has already been implemented, others we work on continuously.
